March 10, 2004
I apologize for the delay in posting the "Christian Carnival" this week.
"The Passion"
Some of the entries I got had to do with "The Passion."
Say what you like about Ann Coulter. Sometimes she demonstrates the absurb by being absurd. She has an acerbic wit. Her latest article about the passion of the liberal. is excellent and doesn't need any further comment. Here's an excerpt:
"In the dozens and dozens of panic-stricken articles the New York Times has run on Mel Gibson's movie, 'The Passion of the Christ,' the unavoidable conclusion is that liberals haven't the vaguest idea what Christianity is. The Times may have loopy ideas about a lot of things, but at least when they write about gay bathhouses and abortion clinics, you get the sense they know what they're talking about. But Christianity just doesn't ring a bell. The religion that has transformed Western civilization for two millennia is a blank slate for liberals. Their closest reference point is 'conservative Christians,' meaning people you're not supposed to hire. And these are the people who carp about George Bush's alleged lack of 'intellectual curiosity.'...As I understand it, the dangerous religion is the one whose messiah instructs: '[I]f one strikes thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also' and 'Love your enemies ... do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you.' The peaceful religion instructs: 'Slay the enemy where you find him.' (Surah 9:92). Imitating the ostrich-like posture of certain German Jews who ignored the growing danger during Hitler's rise to power, today's liberals are deliberately blind to the real threats of violence that surround us. Their narcissistic self-image requires absolute solicitude toward angry savages plotting acts of terrorism. The only people who scare them are the ones who worship a Jew."
I never really thought that black people might react differently to "The Passon" than white people. Christ died for all, regardless of skin color. But Samantha at Uncle Sam's Cabin asks the question Will Black folks like The Passion? She says, "There is a standard in black America for what is black and what is not. Only those things considered black enough make it onto the radar... The Passion just doesn't seem to meet the standard of blackness."
Not all Christians like "The Passion." Jeremy writes, "We've seen lots of controversy from people who aren't Christian against Mel Gibson's current film. There hasn't been as much attention to the arguments given by Christians against the film. This post responds to some of those arguments."
Sarah also weighs in with her Impassioned Reaction.
In the end, it really comes down to "What was the message of Jesus?" Mark sends us the first in a multi-part series that answers this essential question.
Something Lighter
After such a serious discussion of the Passion, it's time for something lighter from Reverend Fun.

Martha Stuart Lying
Is there a religious lesson to be learned from the Martha Stuart verdict? Merl writes, "God made us in his image, so it should be no surprise that we hate liars and seek their punishment. Although I've blogged this before, it is worth remembering that a 'lying tongue' is the second of six things God hates, among the seven he detests [Prov 6:17], and one of those practices we are to cast off as belonging to our life before Christ [Col 3:9]."
Another Spiritual Lesson
This week, Bryan sends us a message from Exodus on how to walk by faith when between a rock and a hard place.
Christian Blogging
Allen asks the (possibly rhetorical) question, "What is the focus we as Christians often have in the blogosphere and is Christ shining through our writing and interactions with those with whom we interact?" He answers his own question by saying, "I think that perhaps we focus too much on the trivial and put life aside in the process."
Godless Wonder
La Shawn is accusing Al Sharpton of being a "Godless Wonder." The "Reverend" says that homosexuals should be allowed to marry. He also believes the "right Christians" support abortion. I tend to agree, Al provides comic relief in the Presidential campaign and little else.
As an aside, how is it that Sharpton can get away with campaigning at a black church? If George W. Bush did the same thing at a white church, the NAALCP and the ACLU would jump all over him screaming about the so-called Separation of Church and State.
The Truth
In contrast to Al's phony religion, Leon asks the question What is Truth?
PETA'S Piggishness
One of my favorite liberal groups to hate is PETA. Hal thinks their latest ad borders on anti-semitism. PETA is equating Christ with swine. He also talks about how one should react when you see PETA protesting KFC.
That's All Folks
Well, that's it for this week folks. I've finally added everything that was submitted (and a few things that weren't.) If you don't see your submission here, please submit it again to carnival@trommetter.org.

Personal Note
On a personal note, please pray for my Father who suffered
a heart attack last week. The doctors did open
heart surgery requiring 4 bypasses. He's home
from the hospital now, but still needs
your prayers.
